Loft insulation can be added to a pitched roof or attic – and it can be applied in a number of ways. In the case of unfinished wooden floors, rolls or light weight slabs can be applied. Alternatively, a layer of loft granulate can be easily installed.

When the floor has a finishing layer or is made of concrete, high density boards are common. This also leaves a remaining, walkable surface.

Why do we need loft insulation?

As heat normally rises, uninsulated lofts and attics are prime places where it can escape from a building. Cold air can also easily enter.

The short-term solution? Turn up the heat when it’s cold – and put the air-con on when it becomes hot.

However, this wastes a lot of energy and leads to bigger heating and electric bills – as well as having a negative impact on the environment.

Installing loft insulation on the attic floor, between and above joists, or on top of floor planking or concrete, can combat this – keeping temperatures at a stable level throughout the year.

When installing slabs or rolls, measure the length and width of the floor to calculate the total surface. Then, determine the insulation thickness required, based on the construction build and thermal regulations. Use these figures to work out the amount of m² you’ll need.

Loft granulate is normally installed by a professional installer, using blowing equipment to do it quickly and securely. Taking the surface area and the required installation thickness will give you the information needed to calculate the amount of insulation to be applied.

If you are installing yourself, be sure to follow the product installation guidelines – these can be found on our product web pages.

Some key tips:

Ensure you have accurate measurements of the area you are insulating.
Inspect all existing joists and electrical cabling, to ensure proper condition.
If laying over ceiling spotlights, put light covers over them for ventilation.
Evenly distribute material and avoid open joints between products. When laying in layers, avoid stacking joints.
